Brief Description about the Mine Project
Germania Corporation Limited formed a Joint Venture with JSC Trest Shakhtospetssroy (Belarusian state concern for oil and chemistry) knowned as Germania-Trest Consortium (GTC) for the Management and Operation of the Maddhapara Hard Rock Mine under the Ministry of Power Energy and Mineral Resources of the People's republic of Bangladesh. Germania Corporation Limited is the Partner-In-Charge of the Joint-Venture.
A Contract named ”Management of Operation and Development, Production, Maintenance and Provisioning Services of Maddhapara Granite Rock Mine” was signed between Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Limited (A company of Petrobangla under the Ministry of Power Energy and Mineral Resources of the People's republic of Bangladesh) and Germania-Trest Consrotium (GTC) on the 2nd September for a period of 6 years at the cost of 171.86 million USD ( 1,400 crore taka approximately). According to the signed contract, the Contractor is responsible to develop 12 (twelve) new stopes and extract 9.20 million metric tons of granite rock within the time frame of the Contract, and also the Contractor is responsible to turn the Mine into a modern Mine through technological modification/upgradation of the key equipment and installations of the Mine under the provision of the Contract.

Introduction:
Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Limited (MGMCL), a company of Petrobangla under the Ministry of Power, Energy & Mineral Resources and Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
History
The unique conception of underground mining of hard rock arose from the absence of such rocks in situ on or near the surface in Bangladesh. These rocks are suitable for coarse aggregate pitching, railway ballast and other multipurpose constructional works. After the discover of hard rock at shallow depth at Lalpukur in 1967 a mining project was prepared and submitted to the then Government.
The geological Survey drilles six exploratory wells. They encountering crystalline hard basement rocks in all of them, with the shallowest one at Maddhapara, encountered at depth of about 128m. following this discovery prospect of mining hard rock was seriously considered. In 1975 a Canadian firm Nenniger and Chenvert (SNC) was engaged to conduct a feasibility study for extracting hardrock. The SNCin its report (1977) concluded that development of an underground mine for hard rock extraction at maddhapara would be technically and economically feasible.
In 1987, the Ocerseas Economic Co-operation Fund (OECF) of Japan extended a loan to Bangladesh government to conduct a study on the Maddhapara hardrock mining area. Nippion Koal Co Ltd, of Japan carried out the study with a local consultant who submitted the reaport in 1990, outlining suggestions on the proposed mining project. Finally, acontract for the implementation of mining project was signed with the South-South Coorperation ( Nam Nam ) representing North Korea government. This mine will be established by North Korea, and handed over to Bangladesh in an operational stage. It has been agreed that North Korea woll provide a fund of about 522core as suppliers credit, for the Tk 697core hard rock mining project at Maddhapara. Bangladesh will pay rest of the fund. The above loan will be repaid to North Korea from the sale of extracted hard rocks.

BangladeshOil, Gas & Mineral Corporation (petrobangla) and Korea south-south corporation (NAMNAM) entered into a contraet on 27th March 1994 for the development of a hardrock mine in Maddhapara, Dinajpur. Maddhapara lies in 25˚33΄15΄΄ N to 25˚34΄15΄΄N latitude and 89˚03΄30΄΄E to 89˚04΄53΄΄ E
Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Limited (MGMCL) is the first experience of underground hard rock mining and the second major mining project in Bangladesh. Geographically the Maddhapara area is lies between Latitude 25023/22// N and 25034/43// N and longitudes 89003/34// E and 89005/04// E in the Parbatipur Thana, Dinajpur district. NAMNAM carried out the geological and hydrogeological survey works such as pump tests, observation of change of groundwater level and geophysical logging in the boreholes, which contribute to clarify the mine area.
Objectives:
Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Ltd. Was established with multifold responsibilities of production of hardrock with daily production capacity of 5,500 M. tons from the underground mine, marketing & selling of the produced hardrock to different Government entities e.g. BBA, PWD, Roads & Highways, Water Development Board, Bangladesh Railway etc.
Maddhapara Granite Mining Company Limited (MGMCL), a subsidiary of state-owned Petrobangla has been employed GTC to increase the production of hard rock and to get the maximum output from the quarry using room and pillar and sub-level drift stooping method. MGMCL has been signed a six-year-long contract with GTC worth US $171.86 million for the operation and development of the mine and over the period approximately 9.2 million tons of hard rock would be produced by GTC from the mine.
Deposits of hard rock were discovered 136 metres under the ground by Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) at Maddhapara and GTC will develop 12 new stopes in three phases. GTC will produce boulder rocks and crushed granite according to the increasing demand in the local market.
